• The narrative alternates between the points of view of Day and June; Day narrates the novel's opening.

• "My mother thinks I'm dead," he begins the story, noting that this false belief makes his mother safer (1).

• Day points out that his "Wanted" poster is shown at least two times each month on downtown Los Angeles's JumboTron, interrupting the normally ceaseless flow of propaganda pictures that show how wonderful life is in the Republic and what a threat the Colonies are.
