Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 47))
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze Amanda's perception of herself in relation to her work in Part I. Amanda is an account director at an advertising firm, and she has an assistant and several employees reporting to her. Amanda admits to herself - but not necessarily to others - that she feels valued and needed when she receives and checks messages from work on her vacation. Alam likely adds these details about Amanda to to give the reader a more in-depth portrait of her character and what motivates her.
Lesson
Class Discussion: What does Amanda do for a living? How does Amanda feel about getting calls and emails, and answering these calls and emails, while on her family vacation? How does this information about Amanda inform the reader's picture about what kind of person she is?
