Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 46, "Lulu" and "Hotline Girl"))
Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to compare and contrast the characters of Lulu and her twin brother, the unnamed narrator, in the story "Lulu," and to analyze Chen's intent in creating such different characters at the center of this story.
Lulu is a precocious, brilliant young girl and woman whose family pins their hopes on her potential. She travels to Beijing to attend a top-notch university, but quickly becomes involved with anti-government protest movements. Lulu begins posting anti-government content online under a different name and is eventually detained, beaten, arrested, and sentenced to jail terms of increasing length, ending with one that is at least 10 years long. Lulu's brother, the unnamed narrator, goes through college and becomes a cook, focusing much of his time and energy on video game competitions that bring him increasing monetary awards and notoriety.
