Objective
“Lamb to the Slaughter” is a 1953 short story by Roald Dahl. Dahl, who is also the author of popular children’s fiction, appears here as a portrayer of adult evil, as a cynically detached narrator, and as an advocate of a grisly form of black comedy. Objectives for this lesson include researching author Roald Dahl, identifying the genre of “Lamb to the Slaughter,” and examining short story structure.

Reading Assignment: Allow students time in class (or assign as a prior homework assignment) to read the entirety of “Lamb to the Slaughter.” Students may choose to read aloud or silently.
Research Activity: Take time to conduct research on author Roald Dahl. Where is Dahl from? When did he begin writing? What are his most famous works? What are major themes in Dahl’s writing?
