The author's father taught at a community college in rural Minnesota. He taught there for 42 years. He taught introductory physics and earth science.

The author lived in a small town in Minnesota. The town spanned four miles from one truck stop to the other. She and her three brothers lived in a brick house located south of Main Street. The house was four blocks west of where her father had grown up in the 1920s, eight blocks east of where her mother had grown up in the 1930s, 100 miles south of Minneapolis, and five miles north of the Iowa border.

3. In Part One: Chapter 1, why did the author's mother have to quit college?

The author's mother had hoped to get a college scholarship. When she did not get one, she went to college anyway and tried to support herself while studying chemistry at the University of Minnesota. However, she was not able to attend the long afternoon laboratory sections and still put in enough babysitting hours to pay her tuition. So she had to quit college.
