• This book is written in the past tense and from the first person perspective.
• In Part One, Klara, an Artificial Friend (AF), an artificial intelligence machine in human form, was new, and for sale in a shop in the city.
• Klara was often paired with another AF named Rosa, and they waited eagerly for their turn in the shop's front alcove, where there was a large window where they could see the outside world the best.
• Klara was a keen observer of the people on the street, including the runners, students, Beggar Man and his dog, and the sun.
• AFs were powered by the sun, and Klara loved to soak up his "special nourishment."
• Klara referred to the shop's supervisor...
