"Kissing Doorknobs" is a young adult novel by writer and documentary filmmaker Terry Spencer Hesser. Published in 1998, it was Hesser's first novel. "Kissing Doorknobs" won an American Library Association award and has been translated into four languages. The novel relates the story of Tara Sullivan, a young girl struggling with obsessive-compulsive disorder. In this lesson, students are introduced to the book and will research and discuss author Terry Spencer Hesser.

1) Teacher Lecture: Introduce the students to the book and author. "Kissing Doorknobs" is a young adult novel by Terry Spencer Hesser. The novel deals with the struggles of Tara Sullivan, a young girl with obsessive-compulsive disorder. The narrative follows Tara's childhood and adolescent years and the many misdiagnoses given by psychiatrists until her symptoms are accurately recognized.
