Chapter 1
• Katie ponders on her childhood with her sister Lynn with the help of the diary Lynn kept. She remembers Lynn teaching her the word Kira-kira, which means glittering in Japanese.
• A dog attacked Katie one night, and Lynn saved Katie by pulling the dog's tail. The dog then attacked Lynn and Katie threw a bottle of milk at the dog, which broke in the street.
• Lynn and Katie both believe the other was the hero of the night. Lynn sprays water at the milk mess worried that the dog will cut its tongue.
• Lynn is a genius who won her very first game of chess. She hopes to use this genius to make money and buy a house for her family.
• Katie's parents own an Asian grocery store, which they have to close because there is not enough business.
