Colie was raised in a very unique environment with her mother traveling a lot and even living in a car for a period of time. The objective of this lesson will be to discuss how this upbringing has affected her life and shaped her character.

Lesson

1) Personal Response to Textual Element: Read aloud with the class the part that explains why Colie is going to stay with her aunt for the summer. Find some information about what this position of Kiki's would have entailed. This may require a little bit of research. After presenting this information, have the students write an essay about how they think being raised by a woman in this unique environment would affect a childhood. Call on some students to read their work. Discuss some of the similarities and differences in the responses read.
