Objective
Objective: Like most creation myths, the introductory tales tell the story of creation of the entire universe from a few initial materials and characters. This lesson discusses the rules that apply to the Finnish creation story.
1. Small group discussion. Ask students to work together in small groups to list the things that pre-date the story, and then the things that are brought into being in the story. What creates what in this story? How do the changing names reflect the changing nature of matter?
2. Class discussion. What are the original principles that the other forms come from? How do those forces create things? Is there a correlation between the things brought into existence and the methods that are used to create them? Who or what has the power to create?
3. Writing assignment. Ask students to write for ten minutes about the different strategies of creation: prayer, birth...
