Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 73))
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze Lucy's and Emma's relationship in Part I. Lucy and Emma are around the same age, and they have children of similar ages that go to school together, which is how they first met. Lucy is going through a separation with her husband Paul, and Emma, somewhat bored and unhappy in her own marriage, is obsessed with the idea that Lucy can date and have sex with other men again. Emma makes a habit of discussing very intimate and personal issues in public places - like in the line for the butcher shop - which makes Lucy uncomfortable. Lucy and Emma are ostensibly friends, but they do not have much in common and Lucy seems to feel that their relationship is more of a hassle than a joy.
