1) Class discussion: Who picks up the hitchhiking narrator from the side of the road? Did the narrator know that this family was going to stop and pick him up? How far was the family willing to drive the narrator? Who are the members of this family? Of the four family members, which one is given a name? Why is the mother the only one given a name? What are some characteristics of the mother? Do you find it strange that the narrator gives her a name but no characteristics?
