Huck and Tom watch Jim as he sits on the steps by Miss Watson's kitchen door. They hide in the tall grass and think they cannot be seen. There is a full moon, and Jim can see them as plain as day even though it is night.

2. What do Huck and Tom do while Jim pretends to sleep?

Jim calls out when he hears Huck and Tom as they hide watching him. He pretends that he thinks the boys are demons or witches. When Jim seems to fall asleep sitting on the steps, they sneak up to the house. They take some candles from Miss Watson's kitchen. Then they take Jim's hat and put it on a nail. They think when he wakes up, Jim will believe a witch took his hat, and put it on a nail.
