Objective

The objective of this lesson is to examine how Jim and then Huck flee to Jackson Island, and how their circumstances compare. Jim flees to Jackson Island because he hears he is to be sold away from his family. Huck flees to the island because he is afraid of his father.

Class Discussion: What does Sadie overhear Miss Watkins and Judge Thatcher discussing? Why does that conversation concern Jim and Sadie? What plan does Jim make to avoid being sold? Where does he go? Why does he decide to hide so close to the town? Who follows Jim to the island? Does Huck follow Jim on purpose? What is Huck escaping? Why does he decide to leave then? How do Jim and Huck's circumstances compare to and contrast one another?
