Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the author’s background and personal interest in the subject matter reflected in the novel. Marilynne Robinson is an American novelist. She has received several awards, including a Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2005. Robinson taught at the Iowa Writers' Workshop for over two decades.
Lesson
Class Discussion: Who is the author of Jack? How was the book received? What else has she written?
Small Group Activity: Divide students into small groups and ask them to compile a list of facts about the author, encouraging them to include information relevant to the book's themes. Regroup and share with the class.
Individual Activity: Choose one fact about the author that you think is most important to understand in reading the novel. Describe how you think that fact will impact the characters, themes, or narrative structure.
