The Shift
This is an experience the main character goes through at the end of the novel when he feels better. It represents the end of his depression, although he describes it as being a shift in his brain where it goes back to the right place.
The Fake Shift
This is an experience the main character goes through when he thinks that his depression is lifting, but it is not really. It represents the notion that mental illness can come and go; it is not static.
The Sergeant
This person is a voice inside of the main character's head that pushes him to be stronger and fight his depression. The voice also praises him when he is battling his mental illness. The voice represents what the main character wants to do and how he wants to be, but for whatever reason he feels he is too weak...
