Lesson 1 (from Foreword & Part 1 - Where I'm At)
Objective
Students will locate specific symptoms of depression in order to better understand the main character. The main theme of the novel is how mental health affects young people, and the main character, Craig, experiences the ups and downs of depression throughout the entirety of the story. Students need to understand the start of the main character's depression in order to follow future events and themes.
Lesson
Class Discussion: The novel opens up with Craig saying that he cannot speak, even though he wants to, and this is the reader's first glimpse into how his depression culminates. In Chapters 1-3, Craig explains additional symptoms and how they affect his interactions with friends, his therapist, Dr. Minerva, and his family.
