When looking at a book for the first time, the reader automatically makes predictions about the book's plot line and outcome based on the title and cover art. Using these two elements, in addition to the other information provided on the book jacket, the objective of this lesson is to predict the book's plot elements and storyline.
Lesson
1) Small Group Activity: Divide the class into small groups of 3 to 4 students. Each group makes a list of 4 to 5 different ideas of what might happen in the book based on the title, cover art and other book jacket information. Groups share their lists with the class to create a master list on the chalkboard or overhead.
2) In Class Writing: Students individually write a half-page response explaining what they predict the title means in relation to the book's plot. What might happen? Who is Nancy? What tone will...
