Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1-7)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is to examine exposition and infodumping and how both are used to provide background information. In Chapter 3, the narrator provides background information about Doremus. Rather than inserting information about Doremus through the story, the narrator just gives a summary of Doremus and his family.

Class Discussion: What is revealed about what is implied about what has gone on in America in Chapter 1? How does the author show the background of what influences the way Americans are thinking at that time? How does the author present this information? Why is this information exposition? How does Chapter 3 begin? Does this interrupt the narrative? How long does it take for the author to present the information about Doremus and then return to the story? Why is the way that the author presents the information about Doremus infodumping?
