Objective
The objective of this lesson is to discuss Zomorod and her family, and what is revealed about the difficulties of assimilation. Zomorod and her family are from Iran. Zomorod is trying to fit in and be like any normal American kid.
Lesson
Class Discussion: How is Zomorod's family different from other families she knows in America? Where have they lived? How often have they moved? What is their native language? How are things different in Iran from America? How do those differences require Zomorod's family to change their behavior? How does Zomorod try to fit in with American kids? What is revealed about the difficulties of assimilation?
Activity: Divide the students into small groups. Have each group discuss what Zomorod wanting to change her name as to do with assimilation. What happens when Zomorod introduces herself? How do kids make fun of her name? Why does...
