Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1)

Objective

This chapter immediately introduces the Aleuts, who come to the island to hunt sea otter. It also mentions most of the characters in the entire story.

The objective of this lesson is to look at how simile is used as a descriptive tool in this chapter.

Lesson

1) Have a class discussion on the definition of simile, asking the students for their own examples, using simile as a figure of speech. Once the definition is fully understood, divide the class into small groups. Have each group use simile to describe something in the classroom. Share all the similes with the class.

2) Have the class reread the chapter and make a list of all the similes O'Dell uses in the first chapter. Have the students explain why they think the similes give an accurate image of what it is compared.

3) Homework: Have the students develop five similes comparing...
