1. Why is the narrator so upset to see Ishmael’s ad in the paper?

The narrator is upset because he once wanted to change the world, in the 1960s, but he watched as the youth movement was degraded to a “fashion statement” and everyone turned cynical about the possibility of change. He is convinced that the ad is a scam and a joke, and that change is no longer possible, so now he resents the naiveté he once felt.

2. Describe the narrator’s first encounter with Ishmael.

The narrator finds the room empty once he comes in, but he notices a window, and sees his own reflection there. Through his reflection, on the other side of the glass, he sees Ishmael’s face looking back at him. The narrator is terrified by the enormity of Ishmael, and staggers into the chair that sits in the room.
