Objective

The Moon Seasons Section 1 | The Moon Seasons Section 2

As they prepare to read the novel Ishi: Last of His Tribe, students should have a basic understanding of the factual story upon which the novel is based. Since the characters and setting are historical rather than contemporary, helping the students "place" the story before they begin will enhance their understanding from the beginning. In this lesson, students will develop their background knowledge by examining the events that inspired the novel.

Lesson

1) Group Activity: Divide the class into groups of 3 or 4 and ask each group to think about and discuss their knowledge of Native American cultures. What do they know about the history of Native American cultures and their interactions with European Americans? How did the Native Americans live before the arrival of European Americans? How did this change after colonization? What do they know about Manifest Destiny...
