Objective

From the start of the book, it seems the author, Andrea Elliott, and the voices in the book are talking about the poor and about how they live their lives is something that is not helpful to society. The objective of this lesson is to discuss the connections between the poor and simplicity.

Lesson

1. Class Discussion: Have the students discuss whether they think it is fair to begin a book with the idea that the rich are the ones who rig the society. What does this say about the book's author? Does this idea seem to be grounded in reality? Do students believe that the poor can also influence society?

2. Writing Activity: Have each student define the idea of rich and what they consider to be rich vs. not-rich.

3. Small Group Activity: In smaller groups, have students discuss whether they think someone who is rich lives...
