Objective
The purpose of this lesson is for students to analyze point of view as a literary technique.
Hawkins tells the story in this novel from multiple points of view. She has an extensive list of characters that she introduces at the beginning of the novel. Not only is the story told from different perspectives, Hawkins also uses different points of view, third, first and second, to tell the story. The variety in point of views offers a unique experience for the reader and helps to differentiate each of the characters' voice throughout the novel.

Understanding Point of View: Provide students with handouts that explain the difference between first, second, and third person point of view. Have students read the first four chapters of the novel. Have students identify the point of view that Hawkins uses in Jules 1, Josh 1, and Nickie 1.
