Objective
In this lesson, the students will research the author’s background.
Luis Alberto Urrea, a Mexican American author and Pulitzer Prize finalist for nonfiction, is a member of the Latino Literature Hall of Fame. Urrea is an award-winning writer of poetry, fiction, and essays and is a professor of creative writing. The students will research the author and determine how his identity, education, and experiences influence this novel.

Class Discussion: Urrea was born in Tijuana to a Mexican father and an American mother. What conclusions can be drawn between his biography and this book? Is the author’s history always important? Does the author’s background have to influence their work?
Journal Activity: This book is often chosen as a city or community read. What is it about the story that many people can relate to? Provide and explain five universal themes.
