Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 44))
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze the narrator's family background as she explains it in Part I. The narrator moved around to many different countries as a child, and as a result, she feels a kind of restlessness or rootlessness. Just prior to her arrival in The Hague, the narrator's father passed away, and in his absence and following her mother's move to Singapore, she realizes that New York City, where they were previously all living, does not really feel like home.

Class Discussion: How do you understand the narrator's feelings about the concept of "home"? Why does the narrator think she experiences a kind of restlessness or rootlessness in the wake of her father's death? How does the narrator think her frequent moves as a child affects her sense of home and place as an adult?
