Objective
The objective of this lesson is to discuss Tet, and how it is celebrated. At the beginning of Inside Out & Back Again, Ha's family is celebrating Tet. Tet is the first day of the lunar calendar.
Lesson
Class Discussion: When is Tet? What foods did Ha and her family eat on Tet in the past? What do they eat in 1975? Why must everyone smile even if they do not feel like it? Why does everyone become a year older on Tet? How is the house usually blessed during Tet? How does Ha intend to break with tradition on Tet and why? How does Ha's family celebrate Tet?
Activity: Divide the students into small groups. Have each group compare how they celebrate the start of the New Year and how it compares to how Ha and her family celebrate the New Year.
