• In the sections from Lurie's point of view, the sections are labeled with geographic locations Lurie visits and travels to.
• In the sections focused on Nora Lark and her family, the sections are labeled Morning, Midday, Afternoon, Evening, and Morning, and the action takes place over the course of a single 24-hour period with some flashbacks.
• Lurie speaks to a companion whom the reader does not yet know the identity of.
• Lurie and the companion, whom he addresses in the second person as "you," are in trouble, being chased by men.
