Lesson 1 (from Section 1: Part One, Prologue and Act One)
Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is to explore the novel Howards End as context for reading The Inheritance. Lopez's play is inspired by the E. M. Forster novel Howards End, and the character of Morgan is based on Forster himself. Most students will be unfamiliar with Forster and this novel, however. This lesson offers background on Foster and Howards End, and then explores the significance of the novel to Lopez's play.

2) Who are the Schlegel sisters, the Wilcoxes, and Leonard Bast, and how is each characterized?
2) What are some themes and motifs generally associated with Howards End?
3) What was the relationship between the author, E. M. Forster, and police officer Bob Buckingham?
