Chapters 1 – 9
• The following version of this book was used to create this Lesson Plan: Wagamese, Richard. Indian Horse. Milkweed, 2018.
• Chapter 1 begins on page 1 and introduces Saul Indian Horse, a man in his thirties of the Ojibway tribe in northern Ontario.
• Saul describes legends his tribe passed on and shared even when he was born, before they “stepped beyond the influence of [their] legends” (2).
• The chapter foreshadows how a change happened with Saul’s generation and they hope to return to the old ways.
• The story begins with Saul as an adult at The New Dawn Centre for alcoholism and where his counselors suggest that telling his story will help him heal.
• Saul spent six weeks in the hospital before arriving at the Centre where he has been now for one month,
• This period is the longest Saul has gone without a drink in years.
