Lesson 1 (from Section 1: Book One, Part 1, Icelandic Pioneer)
Objective
The purpose of this lesson is to introduce students to unfamiliar vocabulary and to understand how using common Icelandic terms impacts the novel.
Independent People is a novel about a part of the world that is very unfamiliar to most of us. Laxness does an amazing job of bringing Iceland alive to his readers and one of the ways he does so is by using traditional Icelandic language that many of us would not encounter in our everyday lives. These terms generally are used to describe the natural settings that play such a huge role in the novel. By understanding these terms and recognizing their placement in the text, students will get a better understanding of Iceland as a setting. Additionally, the traditional terms help to set the tone of the novel, much in the way that using authentic dialect would.
