Visit an Underground Railroad Museum

Plan a field trip to an Underground Railroad Museum or take a virtual field trip via the internet.

Guest Speaker

Have a local historian come in and talk to the class about your town's pre-Civil War history. Have each student prepare questions to ask the presenter.

Virtual Scavenger Hunt

Prepare a list of objectives/questions for students to explore, and create a list of websites for the students to use to complete objectives. Then have the class complete the virtual scavenger hunt.

Slave Spirituals

Select several slave hymns to play for the class. Have the students record how they felt when they heard the songs (uplifted, sad, etc). Have the class vote for a favorite hymn. Ask them why they chose this hymn and have students write their own slavery hymns.

Poetry Write

Have the students pretend that they are escaped slaves living...
