Objective: Chapter 1 Throughout Chapter 1, the author uses the word "consolation. The ways in which G.'s mother, in particular, is consoled by life's disappointments are studied in this lesson.
1. Class Discussion: When it rains so much that G.'s home is leaking and day and night cannot be distinguished, his mother tells him he should not reject the consolation that his birthday "...had brought showers of blessing." Does this console G.? Why does his mother say this to him? In what way does G.'s mother expect him to feel consoled by this statement?
