Objective
The objective of this lesson is to discuss Ngũgĩ Thiong’o’s background and genre choice. Students will learn what a memoir is and discuss why this book falls into that category.
The story is about Ngũgĩ’s experience leaving his village in Limuru and attending Alliance High School. A major focus of the book is how his experience at Alliance shapes him and how it is juxtaposed with the conflict happening in Kenya at the time between Mau Mau Guerrillas and the British colonial empire.
