The novel is related by a third-person narrator who stands apart from the action of the story. The narrator’s perspective is omniscient, principally reflecting the inner thoughts and feelings of the protagonist, Dr. Clements Olin, and remains somewhat limited into the minds of the other characters.

2. Where has “the traveler” arrived in Part I: “A Guest of Poland,” Chapter 1? What does he learn upon his arrival?

Part I: “A Guest of Poland,” Chapter 1 opens as Clements Olin (who is not named until later in the novel) arrives in Poland. After taking a cab from the airport into Cracow, he discovers that buses to his destination won't be available before spring and the next train won't leave until the evening.
