· In the Prologue, Yeonmi Park and her mother crossed the frozen Yalu River from North Korea into China on March 31, 2007.

· They were led by a young North Korean smuggler who had bribed some of the guards to let them cross.

· Yeonmi was not dreaming of freedom.

· She did not know what freedom was.

· They left so they would not die from starvation, disease, or from the inhuman conditions of a prison labor camp.
