Objective

Objective: The objective is to understand the setting for many of the stories throughout the book, Hohman, Indiana, and why the setting was so important.

1) Class Discussion: Describe the Midwest and what makes it a unique part of the country. What characteristics do the people of the Midwest have that they celebrate and cherish? What kind of weather do the residents have to put up with and how does that affect their character?

2) Partner work: Compare and contrast the Midwest to New York City. What are the differences? What are the similarities? How do you think this affects Ralph and his return visit to Hohman?

3) Individual writing: Describe Flick and how he is the perfect example of a Midwesterner.

HOMEWORK: Where would you rather live, Hohman or New York? Explain why, giving specific reasons. Use examples from the book when possible.
