In this chapter the reader learns about the outbreak of war in Poland. It came on suddenly, catching Ryszard's mother unaware. The winter of 1939-1940 became hellish quickly. This objective of this lesson is to focus on war and how it changes people in a specific geographical region.
Lesson
1) Set up each student with a partner. Each partner group should go through the first chapter, jotting down all the incidences that show change in Ryszard's life related to the war.
2) Have a class discussion on the role of the Soviets in the war. Discuss the following questions: Why didn't they kill Ryszard or his mother and sister? How do you think his father escaped? How did they change the educational system in Poland, and did it really help their cause?
