· In the Prelude, Sontag compared life to two kingdoms: the kingdom of the well and the kingdom of the sick.
· Everyone had citizenship in both kingdoms, but people preferred to use the passport for the kingdom of the sick.
· Unfortunately, everyone would have to be a citizen of the kingdom of the sick at some time in their lives.
· In her book, Sontag wanted to describe what it was like to “emigrate to the kingdom of the ill and live there” (3).
· Her subject was not illness itself, but rather how illness was used as a metaphor.
· She did not believe that illness was a metaphor.
· She felt that “the most truthful way of regarding illness—and the healthiest way of being ill” was...
