Objective
Students will learn the genre characteristics of magical realism and use this to assess Chapter One. They will identify the figures of language that make I’ll Give You the Sun magical realism.
Lesson
Class Activity: Introduce the concept of magical realism to the class. While there are many definitions of the term, it generally means the introduction of fantastical elements into everyday life in literature. Example texts that could be used other than the novel are Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel or Gabriel Garcia Marquez’ Love in the Time of Cholera.
Individual Activity: What are some of the images you remember from Chapter One? Draw these images. Then skim back through Chapter One and find another image that stands out to you to draw.
