Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the author’s background and personal interest in the subject matter reflected in the novel. Students will discuss and research information like where the author is from, how old she is, and what other books or stories the author has published. Students will consider how this information might impact their reading.
Sara Farizan is an Iranian American writer of Young Adult fiction. She was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts. If You Could Be Mine was published in 2014 and won several awards including the Lambda Literary Award. The novel stemmed from Farizan's own struggle with her sexuality as a teen.
