· This book begins in the present and is written in past tense for ease of reading.
· In Part One, Chapter 1, Jeremiah could tell by the way the sun felt on his skin that he was Black.
· This sense of the sun on his skin made Jeremiah feel safe.
· Jeremiah’s community of Fort Greene, Brooklyn also felt safe, as everyone there “seemed to be some shade of black” (5).
· By simply stepping just outside his community, Jeremiah felt very uncomfortable about his skin color.
· Jeremiah described how he and other boys would give each other a hard time about their skin color, particularly his friend Carlton whose mom was white and dad was Black.
· Nothing serious was meant by these jabs between Jeremiah and his friends...
