Lesson 1 (from 7:09 a.m. - 12:19 p.m.)
Objective
This lesson introduces students to Gayle Forman’s young adult novel, If I Stay. Students will examine and discuss the characters, setting, and narrative style established in the first section of the novel, “7:09 a.m.” Mia Hall is 17 years old when the novel opens. It has snowed the day before, and as Mia’s family lives in a largely snow-less small town in Oregon, school is cancelled. Mia’s family decides to set out on an adventure, going to visit their friends Willow and Henry and stopping on the way back to visit Gran and Gramps.
