Objective

The purpose of this lesson is for students to understand the literary device of flashback and understand how it impacts the plot and character development in a novel.

Baldwin relies on a flashback early on in the novel to show how Fonny and Tish first met. This literary device allows the reader to stay grounded in the present action of the text while still getting a glimpse into the past. This allows the reader to understand the depth of Fonny and Tish's relationship and how closely their families are connected.
