Lesson 1 (from Part 1: "Hallo" - Chapters 1-2)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze the author's choice of structure and how it sets up a comparison between speakers. The book alternates point-of-views between two main narrators: Caitlin, an affluent American girl, and Martin, a smart, but very poor boy from Zimbabwe. This rotating viewpoint illustrates the very different lifestyles of the two speakers.

Class Discussion: Who speaks first? Who speaks second? What appealed to Caitlin about Zimbabwe? What do we know about Caitlin's life? What had Caitlin learned about other people from her travels to Germany? What do we know about Martin's life? What did Martin know about the United States?
