Lesson

Lead the class in a discussion about Nutbush, Tennessee. Begin with defining the town's geographical location. Ask the students about any current perceptions they have about the city. How have these changed from their perceptions prior to reading the book? How would the students characterize the town in one word? Do the students feel like they want to visit? Why or why not? Do any of the students feel like they would like to live there? Why or why not?

As an in-class exercise, have the students do some online research about Nutbush at the time that Tina Turner was born. What changes have been made in the areas of architecture, commerce, education, etc. They should then write an essay on what new...
