Objective

Introduction to "I Have A Dream." Students need to have some knowledge regarding the Civil Rights Movement and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., prior to beginning the book. This knowledge will aid them in creating a deeper understanding of the material presented in the book. The objective of this lesson is to examine the period of history relevant to the Civil Rights Movement.

Lesson

1. Class Discussion: As a class, complete a KWL (Know-Want to know-Learned). Ask the class what they already know about the Civil Rights Movement. Who was involved? What was the beginning of the movement? What facts can they recall that revolved around the movement itself? Then, have students write down questions they have about the movement. What are they curious about? What don't they understand? Have them write down any other questions they can think of. Write the students' questions on the board...
