The book opens on July 27, 1991. This date is significant because even though Communism had fallen, a war had broken out over the secession of Senia and Croatia. Slavenka reflected on how little things had changed in Eastern Europe, in spite of the fall of Communism. The purpose of this lesson is to analyze the political state of Eastern Europe at the beginning of the book.

Lesson

1. Class Discussion: Why was the succession of Senia and Croatia important? Why did it affect the author? Why was it significant that this happened only a year after the first free elections in fifty years? Why had elections not been free up until this point? Who felt the effects of this war?
