Lesson 1 (from Part I (Chapters 1 - 4))

Objective

The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze Jones's relationship with his grandmother, and to explore how that relationship changes from Jones's early childhood into his early teenage years. Jones spent half of each childhood summer with his grandmother in Memphis, Tennessee, until he was in his early teens. Jones's grandmother loves him but is increasingly disturbed by his effeminate manners and her suspicion that he is attracted to men. Jones's discomfort with his grandmother's opinion culminates in her pulling him more tightly into her religious orbit and trying to get him to adhere to her beliefs.

Lesson

Class Discussion: Where does Jones's grandmother live? Why does he spend part of each summer with her as a child and adolescent? How and when does Jones's comfortable and loving relationship with his grandmother begin to change?
